Ventureneer to Host Social Impact Exchange Conference Bloggers

January 6, 2011 in Civil Society by hima

New York, NY (Vocus) June 15, 2010

Ventureneer.com and Adin Miller Consulting have partnered to provide easy access to insights and ideas from the Inaugural Social Impact Exchange Conference on Scaling June 17 and 18 in New York City.

The Social Impact Exchange is a national membership association focused on increasing investment and sharing knowledge on scaling high-impact nonprofit programs and initiatives.

To help the Exchange in its goal of building “a community that collectively advances the practice of scaling impact in the social sector,” Ventureneer has set up a dedicated web page where the thoughts, take-aways, recommendations, and analyses of influential commentators will be posted.

The Ventureneer site will include links to all blogs from the conference, providing a one-stop central resource for information about the conference and its subject matter.

Information and ideas about innovative methods for scaling effective social programs are the focus of the conference. A mix of philanthropists, foundation officers, wealth advisors, and social-sector leaders will join together to explore ways of financing and implementing the growth of high-impact nonprofits.

The conference will address key issues of how to fund and implement scaling initiatives, and will combine both knowledge-sharing sessions and opportunities for taking direct action. Conference themes include scaling in Youth and Education, Poverty Alleviation, Health, and Impact Investing.

“The most important aspect of the Conference is the active participation of attendees, both during and after the event,” said Alexander Rossides, president of Growth Philanthropy Network, one of the event’s co-producers along with The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Duke University’s Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society (CSPCS), and the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE).

Sponsors include Bank of America, American Express, Public/Private Ventures, The Whelan Group, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, GEO, HSBC, Beyond the Bottom Line, and Louder than Words.

Conference participants can contribute to the Ventureneer site in three ways:

    Tweet using #siex10.
    Bloggers or those hosting content on their websites can send the site’s link to siex10(at)ventureneer(dot)com
    Participants who can’t host their own content can send commentary to siex10(at)ventureneer(dot)com to be posted as Ventureneer guest blogs.

To follow news and commentary, on Twitter, use #siex10. For all conference highlights and an archive for both blog postings and tweets go to SIEX10 conference highligts. Coming soon: track blog posts via rss feed or link directly to SIEX10 central.

Miller had the initial idea for the centralized resource. “Blogging teams have worked effectively for past philanthropy conferences to share content with conference participants and those who cannot attend in person,” he said. It’s a wonderful way to extend the reach of the discussions and engage a wider audience.

“It was a no brainer when Adin Miller Consulting suggested we partner. I had been a coach for the competition and was planning to blog,” said Geri Stengel, founder of Ventureneer. “Our web developer, Nonprofit Solutions Network, had built the Ventureneer website to be flexible so that we could respond to these opportunities by uploading content and apps easily and quickly.”

The initial blogging team will include Adin C. Miller of Adin Miller Consulting, Geri Stengel of Ventureneer.com, and Deyan Vitanovm, CEO and President of Philanthropedia.

Reuters: Analysts Question Effectiveness of Six-Party Talks

December 30, 2010 in The Asia Foundation by Ritu

An article in Reuters focuses on South Korea’s president Lee Myung-bak’s support for inter-Korea dialogue to tackle a possible nuclear crisis. However, many analysts are not as optimistic about six-party talks because of deep divisions and a lack of pressure on North Korea. Scott Snyder is quoted as saying, “There could be some sort of alternative process in 2011 but it is hard to say. There is a lot of pessimism about North Korea right now.” Read the full article: “South Korea’s Lee says talks the answer to nuclear crisis.”

Today’s momentous victory would not have been possible without the help of veteran advocates from across the country.   They told their stories, contacted lawmakers and traveled the country to keep up the heat on repeal.

Today, after the president signed into law the historic bill that begins the process of ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,”  two veteran advocates who spent the past year working with HRC stopped by our offices to record a special thank you message:

What is Bush talking about? War in Iraq “necessary for American security, Iraqi hope and world peace”??? ?

December 21, 2010 in Yahoo Answers by Rights Writer

Question by rare2findd: What is Bush talking about? War in Iraq “necessary for American security, Iraqi hope and world peace”??? ?
BAGHDAD – A man threw his shoes at President George W. Bush and was dragged away by security officials during the president’s farewell trip to Iraq.

The incident occurred as Bush was appearing Sunday with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Bush ducked and wasn’t hit by either shoe. Bush joked, saying that all he can report was that it was a size 10 shoe. then calmly took questions.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

BAGHDAD (AP) — His legacy forever linked to an unpopular war, President George W. Bush flew under intense security to Iraq on Sunday and called the nearly six-year conflict hard but necessary to protect the United States and give Iraqis hope.

Bush visited the Iraqi capital just 37 days before he hands the war off to President-elect Barack Obama, who has pledged to end it. At the end of nearly two hours of meetings at an ornate, marble-floored Salam Palace along the shores of the Tigris River, Bush defended the 2003 invasion and occupation.

“The work hasn’t been easy, but it has been necessary for American security, Iraqi hope and world peace,” the president said. “I’m just so grateful I had the chance to come back to Iraq before my presidency ends.”

The president wanted to highlight a drop in violence in a nation still riven by ethnic strife and to celebrate a recent U.S.-Iraq security agreement, which calls for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011.

But in many ways, the unannounced trip was a victory lap without a clear victory. Nearly 150,000 U.S. troops remain in Iraq fighting a war that is intensely disliked across the globe. More than 4,209 members of the U.S. military have died in the conflict, which has cost U.S. taxpayers $ 576 billion since it began five years and nine months ago.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ah mr. bush. was it a sincere wish for peace and patriotism, or a pernicious pathology?
The world is not a safer place. We are surrounded with enemies, as yet revealed. Saddam killed tens of thousands of his own…well excuse me, but thanks to bush, over a million innocent Iraqis – including so many children – are dead. In fact, Iraq is a graveyard. One does not have to flag themselves as a ‘liberal’ in order to think for ourselves. The deadly dramatics and theatre of a war gone wrong will take decades to repair, if at all. I will never look upon bush as a leader. I will see him, remember him, as a man who – in his so-called religious belief – actually told us that “God told me it was all right to invade Iraq”.
Well if “God” told him that, I’m perfectly free to disbelieve that there is a God after all.
