ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS WITH DATES: TEACHING AND RESEARCH INTERESTS: These include: Criminology and Criminal Justice in the Third World (especially: sociology of law; crime and delinquency; punishment and correction; women, law and social regulations; human rights); Theory and methods in sociology; Social change and development; and Social work and administration. TEACHING AND RESEACH EXPERIENCES: I have over 23 years’ teaching and research experiences at the university level in the areas mentioned above. Over these years I have won a number of competitive research grants, conference awards and produced over 30 well-researched papers and reports, but because of limitation of space I can only mention a few below: 1. CONFERENCE AWARDS AND RESEARCH GRANTS WON: I have competed and won a number of research grants, study fellowships and conference award some of which included: an 8-week conference in Dakar, Senegal, with 14 other African scholars under CODESRIA Summer Institute Programme, namely: Governance Institute; 15th July – 13th September, 1996; emerged in February, 1997, as one of the eight (8) successful Nigeria scholars from a large number who applied for a 3-year (36 months) project grant under Fellowship for Leadership Development (FLD) Programme of the MacArthur Foundation to work in the various aspects of the Nigerian population, gender and development; won a four-week course in innovative education at the International Extension College, Cambridge, U.K., 10th March to 4th April, 1997; a 2-week conference in Merton College, Oxford, with 24 other scholars (World-wide), organized by 21st Century Trust on “Genetics, Identity and Justice”, March/April, 1998; selected as one of the rapporteurs for a one-week conference in Durban, South Africa. Organized by Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) and National Population Unit (NPU) of South Africa on “African Population in the 21st Century” (6th – 10th December 1999); emerged (with two others) as the Third best researchers in the international competition on gender and substance abuse jointly organized by UNDCP, World Bank and WHO in 1997. We worked on “Gender and Drug Abuse Among Youths in Borno State, North-eastern Nigeria implications for Public Policy”. MEMBERSHIP OF PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES: I am also a member of many professional bodies which include: Social Science Academy of Nigeria (SSAN), 1992 to date; Union for Africa Population Studies (UAPS), 1996 to date; 21st Century Trust, U. K., March, 1998 to Date; Criminological Society of South Africa (CRIMSA), 1999 to date; British Society of Criminology (BSC), June 2000 to date, and; International Sociological Association (ISA), September 2000 to date. EXPERIENCE IN MANAGING AN ORGANIZATION: In addition to being a Head of Department of Sociology and Anthropology as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, I also had the opportunity of heading a non-governmental research and documentation center with a national and even international focus for over two years (August 2000 – Jan. 2003). As an Executive Director of the Centre for Research and Documentation, Kano, Nigeria, I was responsible for the day-to-day administration of the centre as well as directing and managing the various research and documentation programmes of the centre. I was also the Chief Accountant as well as the spokesman of the centre. I am responsible to the Board of Trustees (BOT) and Governing Council (GC) of the Centre as well as to the Members of the Centre referred to as the AGM (Annual General Meeting) through the BOT/GC. |
